ANDROID COP
Cert 15
89 mins
BBFC advice: Contains infrequent strong violence, gore
What am I doing watching a movie which was released at the beginning of 2014? Actually, a better question might be: what am I doing watching Android Cop at all?
My bible, filmdates.co.uk, listed that Android Cop was showing at the Rix Mix Cinema in Bethnal Green.
This appears to be its first release in the UK so I found it on itunes and wished I hadn't.
Michael Atkins' movie is Robocop by another name and with a fraction of the budget.
It stars martial arts star-turned actor, Michael Jai White as a police officer in Los Angeles in 2045 when zones of the city have become no-go areas.
He is partnered with a robot cop (Randy Wayne) to rescue the daughter (Larissa Vereza) of the LA mayor (Charles S. Dutton).
Actually, his daughter is on a life-support machine and her soul is in a host body... but, hey, that whole storyline is way too bonkers to delve into.
Anyway, unfunny comedy, in the shape of the relationship between the hard-ass cop and emotionless android, prevails and lots of bad stereotypical villains have various parts of their anatomy blown off.
The character-development is pencil thin, its dialogue is hackneyed and some of the sets look so cheap they may fall down should there be a gust of wind.
It is the type of film which would have been called a b-movie and achieved a cult following 40 years ago. Nowadays, I think it is more apt to call it a b***** awful movie.
Reasons to watch: if you are a fan of Robocop
Reasons to avoid: low budget means it comes second best to other films of the genre
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 3/10
