POINT BREAK
Cert 12A
114 mins
BBFC advice: Contains infrequent strong language, moderate violence, sex
In my opinion, Point Break needs to be viewed from two angles - one which covers its incredible stunts and a second which relates to its embarrassingly shallow plot.
So, if audiences just want to switch off their brains and admire daredevil escapades this may well be for them. Those wanting more cerebral entertainment should look elsewhere.
I cannot join the legions who think Ericson Core's film is a worthless remake of the 1991 thriller because I have not seen the original (my son was a baby at the time and I was in a cultural desert).
As a standalone, it will be particularly remembered for five minutes - when young men in cloaks appear to fly down the side of a mountain. I've never seen anything like it.
As for the plot, Luke Bracey plays a former extreme sports exponent who is trying to prove himself in the FBI by catching the gang responsible for daring heists.
He has worked out that these are part of a secret series of challenges which not even the greatest athletes have ever completed.
Therefore, he offers to go undercover to inveigle himself into the gang and stop their next robbery.
This is where the storyline really falls down. If the daredevil criminals are so easy to track down why don't the feds just turn up and arrest them?
And if they are so secretive and tight-knit, how come they allow a man who has been out of their scene for years to return so easily to the fold?
These are only two of the many questions which Point Break poses. Meanwhile, the stunts keep getting crazier.
Edgar Ramirez plays the leader of the gang while Teresa Palmer is the love interest who also kicks ass.
Ray Winstone is a wizened British agent who manages to attract beautiful women at a surfers' party despite being twice their age and twice as fat as anyone else there.
Do stunt fans care that the plot is so vacuous? I would like to think they would appreciate something with more depth. But, hey, look at the success of the Fast And Furious franchise.
Reasons to watch: the incredible stunt work
Reasons to avoid: the plot is very watery
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: very briefly
Overall rating: 5/10
