BBFC advice: Contains strong bloody violence, gory images
Horror spoofs are almost as certain a failure as a Labour party led by Jeremy Corbyn, aren't they?
Well, apparently not. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Ready Or Not is very bloodthirsty and did not make me laugh out loud but did keep me entertained.
It stars Samara Weaving as Grace - a beautiful young woman who is marrying into one of America's richest families.
Her fella (Mark O'Brien) looks like the perfect fit until he reveals an Addams Family-alike.
Actually, these are much more sinister and believe that their huge wealth has come from a meeting with a forebear - a sadistic game-player.
Therefore, anyone who enters their family has to play a game at midnight on their wedding day.
A card is picked from a box and may present the challenge of chess, draughts or old maid. The one game that really upsets the apple cart is hide and seek.
This requires the participant to hide in the family mansion while their new outlaws hunt them down with an arsenal of weapons, perform a ritual on them before dawn and kill them.
As the chase continues, the tension ratchets up and so does the violence.
I was quite taken by Weaving's contribution as the terrified bride while the pick of the in-laws are Henry Czerny as the patriarch who is convinced that ignoring traditional will end in their demise and Andie MacDowell as his tough-ass wife.
There is also the constantly grim-faced aunt (Nicky Guadagni) who is the sincerest backer of the ritual.
As indicated, I am not a fan of spoofs - particularly horrors, because I don't find that much fun in heads being sliced off.
Therefore, I was rather surprised that Ready Or Not did lure me in but, because it did not prompt any laughs, I cannot be too generous with my marks.
